The financial risks of large IT projects are high

Large ERP-related IT projects are known to be risky because their schedules are easily stretched, unexpected problems and budgets swell. Failed IT projects have even knocked out entire companies (Flyvbjerg & Budzier 2011). They may have taken up to hundreds of millions or even a billion dollars, without being satisfied with the results (e.g. Burton 2012; Charette 2012; Virtanen 2024). The challenge with failed IT projects is that the indirect impact on supply chains and customers is much greater than the money paid to IT vendors.

When implementing AI-based applications, the risks of traditional IT projects are still in place. Extensive pilot projects of artificial intelligence have also been able to take a huge amount of money without tangible benefits. One concrete example is IBM Watson, which was invested in huge sums, but the results did not meet expectations (Adlluru 2024; Nelson Advisors 2026).
